If you run an online shop and sell to customers in the European Union, there is one date you should have marked on your calendar: 19 June 2026. From that date, Directive (EU) 2023/2673 requires all online shops to include a visible and functional withdrawal button.

What is the right of withdrawal?

The right of withdrawal already exists: any customer who buys online has 14 calendar days to return their purchase without giving a reason. What changes with the new directive is how that right is exercised.

Until now, sending an email or filling in a form was enough. From 19 June, your shop must provide a direct, visible digital mechanism accessible from the order itself. In other words: a button.

What exactly must that button do?

The rules are quite specific. The withdrawal button must:

Appear in the order confirmation, order details and customer account area
Be visible only during the 14 calendar days after receipt
Display the mandatory legal text when clicked
Send an immediate confirmation to the customer
Notify the shop administrator
Be recorded with date, time and full identification for possible audits
Work for both registered customers and guest buyers

Who does it affect?

Any online shop selling to consumers in the European Union, regardless of where the business is located. If you run a WooCommerce or PrestaShop shop and your customers are European, these rules apply to you.

Penalties for non-compliance can reach up to 4% of your annual turnover. Beyond the financial penalty, failing to provide this mechanism can lead to complaints and damage to your business reputation.
